The process begins with a design which is then recreated in a CAD program and converted into a film positive. This film positive is then exposed onto a sheet of stainless steel which has been typically pre-cleaned and roughened to increase adhesion. The exposure of the stainless steel to the film causes a photo-sensitive resistant to form on the steel and create the design.

The stainless steel is then placed in an etching solution which removes all the material which is not protected by the photo-resistant. This removes the design from the steel and is the first of two stages of etching. If a deeper etch is required, the sheet is then placed in a further etching solution which further etches the stainless steel and creates the pattern or design.
